Description
These gateways are of a Sarai of Badarpur which is located on Delhi-Mathura Road, it may be said to have been built by Jahangir. According to Zafar Hasan the Sarai is large building made of rubble masonry. The entrance is through gateways on the north and south, there are two enclosures with a gateway between them. The gateways are mostly similar to one another and lie in an axial line.The southern enclosure had the Sarai building and contained arched cells for the accommodation of travellers, now mostly ruined. The northern enclosure known as ‘Ganj’ is surrounded by a battlemented wall with bastions at its four angles. The different Sarai of Delhi including Badarpur Sarai indicate the traffic of pilgrims and traders, the construction and maintenance of public buildings was started during Firozshah Tughlaq and flourished during the reign of Shershah suri who built the Grand Trunk Road as well.?
The central gateway which lies in the same axial line as the north and south gateways is similar in style to the northern gateway. Parts are occupied?
